The Packt Open Source Awards were announced recently and Joomla won Best Opensource CMS!

Winner: Joomla!

1st Runner up: Drupal

2nd Runner up: Plone

The Open Source Awards is a contest that aims to encourage, support, recognize and reward Open Source projects.

Formerly called the Open Source CMS Award, the contest has been going for the past six years and is generally regarded as one of the most prestigious platforms for recognizing excellence in Open Source Software.

To identify the excellence among Open Source projects, public votes for the finalists in each category were combined with ratings from a panel of Judges.

This news comes as no surprise to those of us who have been using Joomla, but hopefully it will bring some notice and credibility that will attract new users and contributors to this robust Web system.

I've been doing Web design for seventeen years, and Joomla design exclusively for about five years. I believe Joomla is the best platform for the majority of Web sites for many reasons.

A few of these reasons are:

  • Open Source
  • Easy for my clients to manage
  • Thousands of great looking Web 2.0 themes to start with
  • Over 8,000 Extensions
  • Strong Community of Developers
  • and more

There are a number of pretty good gallery extensions for Joomla, but nothing that really stands above the rest. I'm still not sure RokGallery does either, yet, but it's a really good start.

Feb 06, 2014 Category Joomla Design

I've been studying and unitilzing SEO strategies on my own, and client's sites for years. I know that the practices I use work by the numerous page one, and even #1 rankings in Google, Yahoo and Bing. Even after the infamous "panda" adjustment by Google, all my sites held their positions, or even moved up.

seoThe challenge in sharing this information in a simple blog post, is that each situation requires a different strategy. Some niches are too small, some are too large and it takes experience and patience to maiximize the results.

I came across the article referenced below, and it appears to have some good resources for any small business owner wanting to learn about SEO. Let me know what you think.

Dec 17, 2013 Category Joomla Tips & Tutorials

errorThis is just a quick tip for those who come later having experienced this error, JError Unable to load Database Driver.

I was in the process of migrating a new client's site from GoDaddy (hate it, as it sucks with Joomla) to their new Hostgator server (love it, it's tuned up great for Joomla) using Akeeba Backup. The process went as normal (database updated just fine) until I tried to access the admin and home pages.

I saw nothing but a white page with, "JError Unable to load Database Driver" across the left side. Not good.

Just to be sure I made another backup, created a new mysql database and tried it again... same result. [read more for the solution]

I've tried a number of blogging solutions for Joomla over the years, and I've settled on EasyBlog. (the one used for this site, and I LOVE it much more than WordPress) But, many users prefer WordPress because they are used to it, or because someone they trust told them that's what they should be using.

CorePHP just came out with a solution that incorporates a WordPress blog into your Joomla Web installation. You check it out here, or read on for more info.

With Modules Anywhere you can include a single module or complete module positions anywhere in your site, including within 3rd party components and even within other modules.
Why use Modules Anywhere, and not the plugin?
It works anywhere, not only in articles. It even works in modules!
You can load a single module, not only complete module positions.
You can control the html display style from within the tag, not only one global setting.
You have some security setting, so you can disable this feature for lower user types.
It comes with a very easy to use editor button.
You can set Modules Anywhere to also handle the tags. In that case, you can safely disable the plugin all together.
