errorThis is just a quick tip for those who come later having experienced this error, JError Unable to load Database Driver.

I was in the process of migrating a new client's site from GoDaddy (hate it, as it sucks with Joomla) to their new Hostgator server (love it, it's tuned up great for Joomla) using Akeeba Backup. The process went as normal (database updated just fine) until I tried to access the admin and home pages.

I saw nothing but a white page with, "JError Unable to load Database Driver" across the left side. Not good.

Just to be sure I made another backup, created a new mysql database and tried it again... same result. [read more for the solution]

JError Unable to load Database Driver

After doing some research and following some leads, I ended up checking out the "configuration.php" file that is found in the root directory. Sure enough there were a number of values that were blank that shouldn't be, all related to the mysql database.

These were:

var $dbtype = '';
var $host = '';
var $user = '';
var $db = '';
var $dbprefix = '';

and then farther down...

var $password = '';

Once I filled in between the ' and ' with the proper values the site came up just the way it should.

I'm not sure why this happened. it's the first time I've ever seen it in performing dozens of site migrations, and dozens more installs. I have a suspicion it has something to do with the way GoDaddy configures their databases, as I've had trouble with these before.

If you have your site hosted on GoDaddy, do youself a favor and think about moving it to Hostgator, Lunar pages, or one of the other fine hosts tuned up just right for Joomla. It will save you a lot of trouble in the future, and your site will load faster too.
